Scottish Power Overcharging Me - Please Suggest

Scottish Power was my gas supplier until March 2016. I was on Pre-Payment meter and pay as you go tariff. On prepayment meter once I have used my credit ,meter stops working and Gas supply straightaway stops to my property. In April I moved to Eon as I was offered better deal. Later on I requested Eon to change my pre-payment meter to Credit meter.
Recently I got the Bill form Scottish Power saying my account is in debit £1150. I rang them up and they told me there is some issue with there billing system and will send me updated £0 bill. Last week again I received another bill, this time £117. And now they are insisting I must pay.How can my account be in debit as my prepayment meter used to stop supply as soon as my credit on gas card was used :(
Now they are saying my new supplier provided some 4614 reading after switching and hence the reason I owe them £117. I checked my current reading it's '12596-823'. This reading is on my new credit meter.

Please help!

Hello jag1979 and welcome to the Forums.

From our side, when you switched to us, we'll have sent the old supplier the meter reading we used to open your account. The way switches work is that it's down to the new supplier to send their opening reading to the old supplier. The old supplier should use this to close their account. This makes sure the same gas in only charged once. As you joined us with a Prepayment Meter, this reading would've been from this meter. Your new credit meter shouldn't be involved at all.

I'd check the opening reading on your account with us. Make sure it's the same as that used by your old supplier to close their account. If it is, then this part looks okay and you'll need to talk to SP about how their bill has been worked out. If not, there's an industry wide process that can be used to sort this out. It's called an Agreed Reads Dispute (ARD). This is where the two suppliers agree a reading between them. The difference, though, needs to be more than 125 units for a 5 dial (metric) gas meter or 45 units for a 4 dial (imperial) gas meter. If below these thresholds, the readings already used will stand. It just means you'll pay a bit more to one supplier and a bit less to the other. To be honest, £117 sounds well above these limits if the bill is about the readings only. Guessing though.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction jag1979. Let me know if you need any more advice as happy to help.

Just a thought but have you registered your account with our website? If you have, the information will be there including past bills from us. If not, you can register now and still see the information you need. Might save you a phone call.

Does the bill not give the full details?

If not, ask for a fully detailed bill. They must have produced one to get to the figure they did. They should have sent you it. The court will insist on one (if matters were to progress that far)

If they have provided one, but you don't understand, either post a legible image here (removing personal details fisrt) or pop along to the CAB with it and they will explain it to you :)

(check also as Eon Malc says that the Eon opening meter reading, as a PPM customer, is the same as the SP closing meter reading)
  • Hello Footyguy,
Thanks for you reply. I am trying to post the image of bill, but monesavingexpert won't let me. This is due to me being a new user (spam filter). What they have shown in the breakdown is below
    Standard Gas
    Start Reading 4400 Actual 14Jan 16
    End Reading 4549 Actual 17 Feb 16
Units Used is 149 = 1659.18 KWH Used
    Standard Gas
    Start Reading 4549 Actual 17 Feb 16
    End Reading 4614 Actual 01 Mar 16
Units Used is 65 = 723.8 KWH Used
    15/01/16 to 01/03/16 Consumption Charge 2382.98 KWH x 4.163p = £99.2
    15/01/16 to 01/03/16 Standing Charge 47 days x 26.090p = £12.26
Total = £111.46 (after this they sent me a payment reminder with £117.03)

My Question To Scottish power is (they have not answered yet) where are all the payments gone which I did on my prepayment gas card between 01January and 01March? They have not shown any of my payments in this bill.

Just a quick question jag1979. Have you had time to check the meter reading we used to start your gas account with us? If we've started from 4614 then all looks well from our end.

You did mention in your first post that you joined us in April but the figures posted are up to 1 March. Did we take over then or are there more charges between 1 March and April. Sorry if I've misunderstood jag1979.
