Hi, does any clever person know if it is ok to seal our beautiful new patio, layed with concrete slabs, with PVA, and if so what dilution? If PVA is considered unsuitable then what should we use please?
Thanks

Why would you need to seal concrete?
Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.
  • Good evening: Here is a link to an excellent site on all things related to paving...perhaps you will find a solution there?

Hi,I wouldn't have thought PVA would be durabel enough, it is water soluble after all.

We had our block paved drive sealed at our old house and hated it. I looked permanenly wet and somehow unatural it was very slippy when wet too.

I would leave the slabs as they are if I were you unless you can get a good matt finish?
  • We were advised by the company that we bought the slabs from that they would need sealing before the winter weather happens along. Apparently any concrete/cement which is open to the weather needs to be sealed, including masonary/exterior walls etc.....the theory being, as I believe it that water is absorbed, the swells when it freezes and so causes damage. The company involved quoted us silly money to seal them for us, and refused to sell us the chemicals needed, hence our dilemma.

Sorry ! that's not true, brickwork in exterior walls are not sealed , in fact it can be harmful to seal certain types of stone work . Concrete slabs / mono block paving will not crack with frost , save your money!

My query is vey similar to op.
I want to seal my concrete paths with PVA.
I am Jetwashing the paths to remove moss, which gets them very clean.
But it also leaves them very porus and the moss will come back very quickly.
PVA is very cheap if you buy 5 or 10 litres or more from a builders merchant and I know it will do the job but what quantities to use.
I was thinking something like 1 part PVA to 3 parts water.

Anybody done this before and can share their experience?

PVA is absolutely no good for this purpose.

If you really must seal the concrete you need a dedicated sealer.

Follow Canucklehead's advice and you won't go far wrong ;)
