BT & Bereavement

Hi,
My mother passed away recently so I need to notify BT. I am going to be living in the house at the moment so I wish to keep the BT line for broadband purposes. I would like to find a better line rental deal though as I rarely use the landline. From the info I have managed to find online, I think I need to ask for the line to be 'stopped' rather than 'disconnected'. One thing I am not sure of is what comes next. Must I sign up for a contract with BT now? I have read that some were asked to commit to a 12 year contract and others a month. Is it not possible to stop with BT and start with say, the PO?

Are BT Bereavment team handling this .

You will need to sign up yourself to a provider .In effect you notify BT the user has passed away and the BT contract is cancelled along with the services . You then take out whatever contract you wish with any ISP .
Minimum terms are usually 12 months not years .
  • If I cancel the services then won't I be charged a reconnection fee to get the BT landline back?

    Not sure about that .
But you are not cancelling in effect the account ceases upon death .

In a similar situation i spoke to the bereavement team and started a new account in my name .
Line rental is a monthly contract but broadband is a minimum 12 months contract .
If you want broadband then you need a landline nothing to do with phone its a data line .

You have two choices let BT end the contract due to death of the user .You are free as a new customer to take out what you want .Or take on a contract with BT . If you want Broadband then you are tied in for 12 months .
  • I understood that you can't get broadband without a phone line but your options are limited as most broadband providers use BT's copper wire telephone network to deliver an internet connection to your home, and that requires an active phone line which you'll need to pay line rental for. I have a month by month contract with Plusnet for my broadband and pay as you go with GiffGaff for calls so I just want to maintain the BT line then transfer to someone for cheap line rental.

I did not inform BT but sorted out first what was going to happen .
If you are with PN for broadband see if they will accept the BT data line . If so pay BT monthly until you swap line provider .
Possible PN will negotiate a new inclusive package for you .

The BT advanced one year line rental circa £195 rises on the 3rd July as do most BT prices .

Giffgaff is no longer one of the inexpensive PAYG providers and, although GG to GG calls being free is handy, other calls are 15p/minute now.

I've switched to Three PAYG because charges are 3p/minute and credit never expires.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

Has anyone good experience using the Signal app on their mobile for free texts and calls (internet texts, calls through extra secure internet servers).

If I used the Three Payg would data alone just needed if all calls and texts are on data use. How much would cover all calls texts, would this app need much to use.
If I only use data use on my phone for this app and not much else.

Random old thread bumped up probably because it has BT in the title and was found using the forum's search engine.
