Advice please

Hi,

Today I went into a car park and swung into a parking space, the person in the car next to me got out and said I had hit their car. I looked and there was about 5/6 scratches in a line above their wheelarch and the same on mine. I rubbed my hand over them and basically you can't feel the scratches but can see them so they aren't deep. They asked for my insurance etc and I gave them this as I had not actually done this before. However, I came home and my partner said that the scratches would literally tcut out, I said my car had more damage than theirs. The driver advised I called my insurance as soon as possible, but what I'm wondering is what is the process? Can you sort out paying it outside of insurance legally? Just to add one of the people in the car was a police officer off duty (not a police car). I don't know what to do?!

You do as your policy agreement suggests, you can't go around bumping into peoples cars without consequence.

As they have your insurance details it would be best to tell your insurance as the other party definitely will.
From that point you can discuss with the other party to sort it out outside of insurance. But an incident (report but not claiming) will still raise your insurance for next year.

They may decide to have the wing resprayed or machine polished so insurance would be cheaper for you.
From your point of view though you do not have to claim and just polish the marks off yourself so you don't pay any excess.
If the other party does claim then you will lose 2 years no claims bonus and you will not receive any for this year either.

Hi, I wasn't suggesting that there should be no consequence. A few people said that it could be sorted outside of insurance for small marks however, I didn't want to broach this given the circumstance. The other people have a copy of my insurance and drivers licence so it will be sorted just reflecting on what happened!

Thank you, that's helpful :) haven't been in the situation before so just did what needed to be done but as I came away and thought about I just wondered what others had done and whether or not I should have done anything differently.

Did you also get their details. Technically speaking you were involved in and accident and both sides are required to exchange details by law. And a police officer off duty or not should know that.

Hi, I got a phone number, name and the registration number but no other details. Should I have got their insurance details?

No, but you should have got their address plus the name and address of the owner if different to the driver.

Of course you knew all that being a full licence holder. ;)

It depends on the car condition etc, yes things can be sorted without making a claim (but only sometimes). You still have to notify the insurance though.
Your premium may not increase, mine has not increased as a consequence of an incident.
