Does anyone know of a cheap way to make the occasional call from a BT or Talktalk landline, or from a mobile, to a Malaysia landline during office hours there?
Thanks for your advice.

From most Mobile Networks . http://www.dialacode.com/cheap-international-calls-to-Malaysia No account needed.
Or open an account with https://www.localphone.com/call/malaysia or similar.0 -
From a BT landline that has inclusive calls to 0870 numbers find a dial-through provider with an 0870 number that still counts towards your inclusive allowance.0

Not always a good idea if its a well known one. As calls to dial through numbers are excluded .
"What is a dial-through access number?
A dial-through access number is any number which connects you to another number that is both known by, and could be directly dialled by you from your BT landline. The dial-through access number charges a cheaper rate. There are typically two types of these calls.
You first dial an 0870 or 0845 number and then, while still connected, you dial the intended destination number to be connected
You're connected directly to the intended destination number by dialling an 0870 or 0845 number, having previously routed the destination number through an 0870 or 0845 number, which can be done via the internet or by other means"

Agreed, best to be aware of this rule - providers other than BT who offer inclusive 0870 calls also have similar rules.0 -
Open an account with 18185.co.uk and set up a DD.
Then you will be able to use their freephone dial-through 0808 1 703 703 number to make calls to Malaysian landlines for 4p connection + 1½p/minute.Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.0 -

I'm a bit muddled by the 18185 rates for calling a Malaysia landline.
www.18185.co.uk/rates.php for dialling via the 18185 shortcode (from BT and compatible lines) shows a rate of 2.5p a minute to Malaysian landlines (+4p connection charge).
www.18185.co.uk/mobilerates.php for dialling via the 0808 or 020 access numbers shows a rate of 1.5p a minute to Malaysian landlines (+4p connection charge).
I'm guessing the second page is probably wrong and hasn't been updated.
18866 actually offers 2p/min (+4p connection charge) to Malaysia landlines when calling via the shortcode from a BT or compatible line, though it's 3p/min (+4p connection charge) when calling via the 0808 or 020 access numbers.
Setting up an account with either of these providers (both are actually run by the same company, along with 1899) is easy and painless.0 -
No, dialling via 0808 1 703 703 is, indeed, 1p/minute cheaper than using the 18185 prefix on a BT landline to call Malaysian landlines (I use it all the time to call Spain for which, similarly, it's 1p/minute instead of 2p/minute).Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market.
