Neighbours house a mess, rats and spiders

Options
Our neigbour struggles with conversation, keeping his house and garden and possibly has some learning difficulties or on the autistic spectrum. His house is unkempt, the garden a jungle front and back and we never see him.

While we have the occasional rat jump his fence just recently we have had false widow spiders in our conservatory (and consequently house) and we had a guy in to fumigate for us. The guy was surprised to see false widows in such a tidy house, he said usually he is called out to hoarders. We wonder if our spiders have come from next door.

How can we help our neighbour regain control of the house and garden? We, and others have spoken to him many times. It's not a financial problem as someone offered to paint his house for free.

What sort of services could be contacted? We don't want to upset him. Not sure the council are interested. Any ideas?

Person that fumigated is talking absolute rubbish, cleaning may help keep pest etc to low levels but most certainly doesn’t stop them, If its as suggested your neighbours garden that’s there haven not a view I share as if it were they would stay there not wander of into an inhospitable area which if you believe what your pest control person said your home is ?

Communicate with your neighbor often showing care or concern rather than a self beneficial outlook gives better results ( regardless of sincerity) offer to share with them the wonders of gardening offer them new knowledge, a hobby, etc,

Painting someone’s house says more I don’t like the look of your house it makes the neighborhood look scruffy rather than it doing much beneficial to the person living in it and some might say makes them feel even more of an outcast.
If your getting infestation of pest then there are natural remedies plants etc that can be planted in and around your there home and garden that deter them Lemongrass, basil, mint , rosemary etc

I think you are being unjustly harsh and have this totally wrong

The OP is trying to protect their property by helping what maybe a mentally disabled person next door, how can you criticise them for that??

    You also state

"Person that fumigated is talking absolute rubbish, cleaning may help keep pest etc to low levels but most certainly doesn’t stop them",
No but it kills them and if they come back it is from elsewhere.
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed

I'd love to communicate with them often however we never see him, and he will not answer the door. On the odd occasion i have spoken to him I have tried to keep it light and general as he is a lovely quiet neighbour to have.

We only made the connection with next door and our spiders after the fumigation guy had said he'd been called out to 6 infestations of false widow this year and they were all hoarder esque properties.

False Widow spiders are now one of the most common spider types in gardens and homes. These aren't 'infestations', they're just spiders living where spiders will. It's got nothing to do with the state of your neighbour's house.

We had them in our last place, and I just put them outside with all the other spiders.

Wrong were ? Its there garden and house they can do as they wish to it and not wanting people to come around and paint do there garden etc defiantly not signs on metal disability whatever that is ? It may well not be a popular view with the white picket fence brigade but people can do what they like to there homes and gardens without having mental illness ? Maybe they think I don't like my irritating, interfering, neighbors but rather than wanting to upset I'll just keep my contact with them down to a minimum.....

    Not true
If you wish to fumigate your home every 30 mins to 30 days (dependant on chemicals) Then be my guest although that doesn’t kill those that come in from out of the fumigated zone under your door etc even immediately after fumigation (might in a few hrs but might not ) Eradicate cause not symptoms that’s pretty basic stuff

Also protect there home how exactly from the threat of arachnids and a misguided theory perpetuated from supposed Pest control person there from next doors garden ? Using a method that won’t work other than whilst there fumigating and then only if pest comes into contact with it and will most likely make infestation worse:rotfl:

Red Raid in an aerosol spray kills on contact and can be sprayed into holes, doorways, windows etc for 28 day protection. Any crawlies across it will be paralysed and starve. (Approximate mechanism of action.) xxx

Call environmental health about the rats. They can look and see whether they are nesting next door or just using his garden as a run, and speak to him to get it sorted if necessary.
However many houses have gardens which are jungles - some people regardless of cognitive ability just aren't bothered. Unless it's a health hazard, if he doesn't want help there's not a great deal you can do.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

They can do with it as they wish up until it reaches the point where vermin such as rats are living there and getting into neighbouring properties.
Once this starts happing, anyone is entitled to get their local council environmental health department involved.

    I agree.

Our next door neighbours had a rat problem a few years ago and the source was traced to an area behind the garage of the property backing onto theirs . The owner of that house had been dumping food and garden rubbish which attracted the rats and gave them a comfortable shelter.

The pest controller was not called to premises for rats is the way I read the OP

There is also no mention at least posted that the Pest controller believed neighbours garden to be a haven for rats or indeed whilst at the premises they did anything about “Rats “ So my conclusion is the pest controller whom was at the premises saw no signs of rat infestation ? Either that or OP omitted that info or Pest controller was not very good at there job

The Pest controller has stated Arachnids they have been called out to exterminate are normally only in houses of hoarders That says to me ( apart from pest controller doesn’t know what there talking about ) that pest by controllers doesn’t know why the house is full of them it is not an ideal environment for them ?

I totally agree with environment health being called if there is a problem but have seen no evidence of this and as there are much more effective ways of dealing with arachnids? Hence my conclusion Pest controller is talking rubbish there are some very good ones but there are plenty of cowboys exploiting the unsubstantiated fear of these killer spiders :rotfl:
