Tax credit joint to single claim

Hi I've applied for joint to single tax credits over the phone a week ago. I know it can take up to three weeks. Just wondered if anyone else had done this recently and how long it took. I've just got to budget my money for fuel, food child care etc as I don't get paid from work till the end of the month. Thanks for reading

  • Hi

I have reported a change in circumstances a few times and each time they have been very quick at updating my payments. I would say within two weeks. I have often had the new higher payment into my bank before the letter arrived ( I get it paid directly into my bank weekly).

It might be worth a phone call to see how the claim is progressing - hope that helps x

joint to single (and vice versa) is not really a "change of circumstances" on a tax credits claim. The joint claim needs to be closed and an application made for a single claim. OP have you requested they send you the form to open a new claim?

Joint to single claims are done by phone.

You phone for a form, then complete it and send it back to them, be quick as they will only backdate a month and your joint claim will be deemed to have ended on the date your partner left. It is classed as a new claim.

As I said, a form is not required for joint to single claims. When you report the change you are transferred to a dedicated team to complete the new claim over the phone (providing you call within certain time limits).

This has been the case for quite a few years now.
