Windows 10 involuntary upgrade - minor problem

We did not agree to the recent free upgrade to Windows 10, kept getting 'invitations' which we refused/ignored. Turned PC on the other day & there was a message saying Windows 10 installation would take place in 14 mins! Which it then went & did.

Bit miffed but have managed to get the PC pretty much back to the various 'views' & stuff we had before (couldn't care less what 'Edge' is, didn't like the 'Bing' thing or the 'assistant' with the silly name). Not techie or particularly PC literate or orientated so lots of features we couldn't care less about.

Anyway, there are two users hubby & me. His desktop view is fine, all the shortcut icons where he put them, when I switch to mine they aren't. Keep lining up in columns down the left side. So I move what I want out of the pack back to where I want them.

But each time we swap from me to him & back again........they've moved. It used to be easy to fix them where I put them before but I cannot find the instruction now. Looked everywhere (in particular anywhere that might include the word "desktop") but can't figure out how to do it now.

In addition, when he signs in it take no time at all to go from the sign in screen, but when I switch to me it takes a couple of minutes to gain access - any ideas why that is, didn't happen before. I'd just click switch user & it switched immediately. Not any more.

Sorry techies, questions will sound trivial to you I'm afraid.

Right click an empty area of desktop. On the menu that appears go to the sort entry and make sure everything in there is not selected. Then you should be able to arrange the icons as you wish.

Try to avoid the Switch User mechanism.

My wife just has the icons on the desktop as they fall (never uses them, just the taskbar icons).

I like my desktop arranged a particular way.

Whenever my wife used the Switch User mechanism my desktop icons would go to pot, so I'd have to rearrange them. This was repeatable it did it EVERY TIME!

In the end I disabled Switch User from the menu options ... when you click on the user icon the only "switch" option now is to logoff.

PS - it's probably option 2 you'd need to follow.

'Switch user' turned out to definitely be the problem, thanks bod1467 Just signing out when we want to switch keeps my desktop icons in place & is actually faster than switch user for me.
