Painting over wall-paper?

I would be grateful for some practical advice on this...
My kitchen has wallpaper, and just one section has got really tatty and is peeling. A firm of decorators has proposed removing the tatty bit and painting the plaster underneath... but they also propose to paint over the remaining wallpaper so that it matches! I had thought that this was a lazy short-term way of going about things, since the wall-paper would start peeling before there would normally be a need to paint again (plus the painted wallpaper would not match the painted plaster), but am I out of date? Is this now a sensible way to go about decorating?

It's what I've done in my hall stairs and landing but I'm not sure I'd expect a professional company to suggest it. If you're paying (and don't mind paying for the extra preparation time needed) tell them to strip it all off and do it properly.0

I painted over wallpaper in 2 rooms. I did this as I know the walls which were lathe and plaster were in pretty poor shape and removing it would be of no advantage.
As long as its good paper and well stuck, it should be fine.
Depends what's underneathNO to pasty tax We won!!!! Just shows that people power works! Don't be apathetic to your cause!0 -

I am faced with a similar issue and isn't painting over the wallpaper just delaying the 'eventually' needs to remove it and plaster it? I am keen very soon to scrap the wallpaper off and paint on the actual wall and because the wallpaper has been painted over already, I am afraid it's going to be a nasty job to removeEU expat working in London0 -

Can the tatty section be replaced with lining paper or similar? (then painted)0
