I had a similar argument in reverse with Halifax. A cheque in my maiden name from a solicitor closing our account with them more than 6 months after I'd changed the name on my bank account to my married name. Apparently 6 months was the cut off and I should go back to them to re-issue the cheque. I said well no I'm not going to do that as that's a real hassle (and they clearly aren't very quick if it's taken them so long to issue me a refund cheque!) when you've received proof from me that I can use either name legally....they cashed it.
I guess common sense prevails if you speak to the correct person nicely. You've provided proof you can call yourself either name, they shouldn't have an issue.

I bank with First Direct and use HSBC counter services. I just take my marriage certificate and it's never a problem. I would speak to someone else at the bank or try a different branch.

I opened a bank account using 2 utility bills and the mortgage statement.. you dont have to have photo Id not everyone does .. so you could go through quidco or similar open an account which gives you cashback pay in the cheque and move on with your life.People open new accounts all the time, I have 6 though so it isnt unheard of.

You say "likely to ask for I.d" Have you bothered to look into this? How about an online account in your married name ?

I'm with the Halifax. I took my cheque in with my marriage certificate and paid the cheque in to my bank account in my maiden name.

Also with Halifax, account still in maiden name as is passport. They've taken a cheque from me every year since I got married 8 years ago in my married name without question with my marriage certificate. It's not illegal to use both names and have accounts with maiden and married name - that's rubbish. You're legally entitled to use both names for as long as you like. In your position I would just ask Halifax to open a savings account in your maiden name with the ID you have then once it's opened present them with your marriage certificate and cheque to change the name. Once the cheque is cleared you can transfer the ££ to your current account.

I'd go to Natwest and open an account there.

My middle name is a surname and utility companies etc seem unable to accept this, so often my bills come with my middle name as my surname. I had a refund cheque from Scottish Power for hundreds of pounds that I took in and they accepted it straightaway, no questions asked.

Thank you - the `money laundering' line is being used for all sorts of added layers. They said that having two named bank accounts is illegal - hmm well. I am working out how best to fight the battle/work the system.

I've got two bank accounts in two different surnames- I changed my name by deed poll and I've got a double barrelled surname. I have an old account with Barclays in my birth name that I do still use but my benefits are paid into a Lloyds account in my new name. Never had an issue. It's certainly not illegal- that's rubbish.
