family annual travel insurance advice

I am hoping for some advice about family travel insurance - whether it would be better to buy annual insurance for the family.
About every second year we travel as a family to Europe for one weeks holiday, so far we've just bought travel insurance for a single trip when we do this.
In addition though, we often travel about the UK, booking weekends away at things center parcs and other holiday centres, and half term breaks in the UK, these often involve UK flights. The costs vary, but usually in the range of 200 pounds to 500 pounds.
I've never bothered with insurance for things in the UK, but always been a bit anxious about missing a flight due to car breakdowns, or getting held up on motorways. I also worry about having to cancel a weekend away because of family illness.
Usually we travel as a family of 4, but sometimes, its just one adult and two children. (Not sure I want to have to remember to call the insurer in advance to let them know its not 4 travelling.)
Would annual travel insurance cover us for UK breaks, and the types of problems I'm worried about? Its not clear to me whether its worth our while, as if there was an excess on claims of 75 pounds per person, then it often wouldn't cover the types of costs we usually incur.
Airlines like BMI often encourage you to use their insurance in case of problems, but again, I'm not convinced that the excess makes it worth our while.
Does anyone have any advice on this area - some guidance would be greatly appreciated.

With annual family multi travel insurance policies it probably will be that little bit more expensive. Terms and conditions vary depending on the underwriters, and some do and some don't cover travel within the UK.
If they cover travel within the UK, there would be certain restrictions for example, 2 or more nights in pre-booked accomodation that is x miles from your home address...
policies will exclude medical and emergency cover for travel within UK as you'd still be covered by the NHS.
cancellation/curtailent would probably still be in place, but things like travel delay would be iffy especially when it comes to delays on motorways (accident/heavy traffic/bank hol) where it may have been forwarned and it would probably speicificy that you leave as much time as possible in you leaving your house to getting destination (accomodation whereby your room could be given away if you don't arrive for check in).
the best thing to do is have a google online at different policies that are annual family policies, even have a look at airlines and see how that compares to what you have with the single trip policy for when you're outside the UK.
Don't forget that some items that you'd take on hols (cameras, ipods, phones, etc) may also be covered by your household/home and contents insurance while you're in the UK, so it may be worthwhile checking that up too.0 -

Have done several quotes and Atlas has worked out the cheapest so far for a sinle trip for 3xadults and 1xchild. Have you ever had cause to claim from them. If so, how was their service.
