One fact to consider. When you nephew moves in, he will have to contact the properties existing supplier(s) and give them the meter readings. They will set up an account on their cheapest no exit fee tariff. Once these accounts have been setup then and only then can you switch to a cheaper provider. If the existing supplier is the one you want to go with then ask for the tariff you want at that time.

Q1. Both websites would have shown the name of the tariff, if it is the same then join by either method.

Q2. Online discount means you agree to handle the account online and do not get paper statements.

Q3. No idea

Q4.& Q5 If you are on a fixed tariff, that means that the unit charge per KW and standing charges will not change during that period. If you got the estimate wrong, then you pay for what you have used plus the standing charges if applicable. Only seen one tariff that had minimum usage figures in the T&Cs.

Standing charge Gas on the high side try ZOG for gas .

Q3 don't know but Scottish Power have been heavily fined by the regulator .

The cheapest deals presently are with separate suppliers for gas and electricity. When looking at dual fuel deals there is more to the equation than just the daily standing charge and price per kWh. Most suppliers offer discounts for dual fuel and DD payments

Look at Zog Energy gas and GBEnergy for electricity. Neither supplier offers referral fees so there is no point in using a comparison site as there is no Cashback available.

That said, if your nephew is newcomer to the energy market there is much to be said for a dual fuel arrangement. I can recommend Ovo. They have an excellent app and produce monthly bills - so no big surprises. Your nephew will have to get out of bed and read the meter!!

I was checking and comparing comparison sites and it showed that EnergyHelpline are not always including discounts in their pricing - they are not showing the £5 pa discount on the MSE E.On Feb 16 collective on line billing electricity only.
