Deposit on a credit card?

Not sure if this is the right place, but here's my question:
If I use my credit card to put a deposit on a holiday apartment, how does it work with my balance?
The deposit would be a safety net - it would be given back at the end of our rental. If this money gets taken out, how would it be refunded if it goes over my balance?

I guess it wouldn't be a problem if they don't take the money out but just take the card number, but if they do would it be a problem?

Thanks, I'm new to this.

It depends if they are actually taking a security deposit to be returned, or whether they are putting a hold on funds in the event of damage etc.

Either way, you need to make sure you have the available balance for when it is taken.

If they do physically take a deposit rather than reserve an amount then you may be subject to exchange rate risk, as well as currency fees. Just soemthing to be aware of.
  • Ok thanks. So if they're asking to reserve an amount I'm fine, if they actually want to take money out I'm better doing it in cash? Thanks.
