Whats behind our corner wall

Hello,

We recently moved into a property and we are starting to think about things we can do do improve/remodel it. Its a Edwardian/Victorian upstairs maisonette.

Bedroom 2 is a fairly small room in the middle of the property, it is a slightly odd shape with the corner blocked off which is making it more difficult to fit a bed/wardrobes. This seems to be a very common design/feature in the area. I would ideally like to take out this corner. My Questions are -

1) What is the likely reason for this, I guess it may have been a fireplace at some point which is now blocked up?
2) Wold removing it cause any issues to the structure
3) any estimates of how much it would cost to get someone to remove it and make good?

Here is the plan for Illustration, its the bottom left corner....

"Edit - I dont seem to be able to post a link to the plan "

Many Thanks

Could it be chimney from a long ago removed fire in the room below?

It sounds like a blocked of fireplace.

Very common in Edwardian houses was to have a corner fireplace in the hallway, and the room above would have had a very small bedroom fireplace. That's what this is most likely to be.

You could remove it, but first the chimney above (if it is still there) would need to be supported.

Are you able to get into the roof space above to see what's there?

Good idea about checking in the loft thanks, will have to clear some stuff first

Pretty sure that's an old fireplace.
  • Ok thanks, so we "should" be able to knock it through but we need to ensure to support the chimney above properly and as such we should consult a professional before we get the hammer out?

    A previous occupant perhaps?

And the council as you'll need to ensure you comply with building regs.
