Quick-release wheel - brake problem

Options
Hello

Not sure whether anyone can help. I was given an old cheap mountain bike (about 1990) that was in ok working order but since I released the wheel to get it in my car, I can't get the brakes connected again. Is there something wrong with this as I know how to do it on most bikes, it just won't reach! ? It is not worth much and I am going to use it to leave at a train station so don't really want to spend money having it serviced.

Thanks - as it was fixed before I took the wheel off and transported, I'm not sure - do you mean this part may have been lost?

I'll go and have a look - have just found a video so I think I know what you mean now.

It is by the handlebar. I've released it right out but there is still no give. I am not sure whether I have put the wheel on in such a way as the brakes can't be fitted. It's really strange!

Just slacken the brake cable off by untightening that nut on the RH brake arm.

In the picture the fork brace is touching the tyre. There should be about an inch between them. Take the wheel off and make sure its fitted properly before trying to connect the brakes. If it still wont connect check the brake shoes haven't been knocked out of position and are now pressing on the tyre.

    loosen the quick release.

Pull the noodle away from the rubber boot

    Squeeze the brakes together.

Push the nipple shaped part of the noodle into the slot on the end of the arm - if too tight slacken as the brake lever end as others have said.

pull the brakes on to centre the wheel, and do up the quick release.

Test the brakes work before riding.

Do at least check your tyre pressures, lubricate the chain and the brake cables etc. plenty you can do yourself for next to nothing to try and make sure it goes and stops, even if some would say its not worth it.

ok doh I will have a look. I've been comparing it to my 'proper' bike and couldn't see what was different!

It would be good to see pictures slightly further out showing the rest of the fork and the wheel, I agree with the posts above that something looks wrong when the fork brace is resting on the tyre like that - there should be a reasonable gap between them. I can't see how that would be possible if the axle for the wheel is sitting in place though so it would be useful to see a wider picture.
