Exceeding Overdraft Limit

Hi, I have had a gambling problem most of my life. My bank HSBC are well aware of my gambling problem as I use my debit card on gaming websites and would normally spend 90 percernt of my months pay in two days. I asked them if I could have a £400 overdraft, they said no problem. Without asking , they let me exceed my overdraft limit by over a £1000 and have been charging me £80 a month charges for the last 2 years.
Can I claim these excessive charges back as I only asked for a £400 overdraft ?

You may well have asked for a £400 limit, but only you can take responsibility for exceeding this and the resultant charges..0

It's possible. It's certainly odd that the bank allowed the online card payments (I assume) to be authorised. Most banks auto reject anything which is more than say £50 over an agreed overdraft limit.
Keep a chronology and record everything and email a complaint to HQ.Please be polite to OPs and remember this is a site for Claimants and Appellants to seek redress against their bank, ex-boss or retailer. If they wanted morality or the view of the IoD or Bank they'd ask them.0 -
The PDLs were hit with a big irresponsible lending ruling.
IMO it doesn't take reading too many gambling related debts to realise that banks are failing in their duty to lend responsibly.0 -

If the bank knows you are gambler, they will reduce your credit rating internally with them. This will include mortgages. However, if you havent told them, there are not going to be able to guess.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only.
