Renting question - paying upfront 6 months

If we decided to pay 6 months upfront for a rental property when would that have to be paid by? Is it due on the day of moving in or earlier?

You need to ask the landlord or their agents when they require the rent paid.

Obviously, that's a lot of money. I guess you've made sure that whoever you're paying really is the owner of the property, or is genuinely acting on behalf of the owner - as opposed to being a fraudster.

I would expect it to be that same as if you were paying rent monthy, where the norm would be for the first months rent to be paid on or before the first day of the tenancy.

Thanks for the replies. We would be leasing through a large local estate agent.

If the terms of the tenancy are 6 months rent up front, read the tenancy agreement (or ask the landlord/agent) when payment is due.

Check also whether the agreement is for a monthly rent of £X with 6 months rent payable in advance, or a 6 monthly rent of £Y (ie X x 6) payable in advance. It makes a difference!

If however the tenancy agreement simply requires 1 month rent in advance (more usual) but you are unilaterally deciding (for some strange reason) to pay 6 months in advance, then

    * check the agreement to see when the 1st months rent is due (as above), and pay the other 5 months whenever you want!
