    Paying for something does not make you party to a contract unless you are willing to become party to that contract and your wishes are known to and accepted by all the other parties involved.

    In english law gifts are only enforced when gifted by deed.

    In this situation, while he can't ask for any money he's already paid to be returned, he's not bound to go on paying either.
