Marriage Allowance issue - SA return

Hi,

My other half only receives income from property which is around 5k. We both registered for SA but I am also in full time employment.

She completed online form last year to transfer 10% of her allowance to mine. All fine. I received amended tax code through the post.

She was trying to submit her SA return online. One of the question comes up is:-

Do you want to transfer 10% of your personal allowance to your spouse/civil partner? She selected Yes.

The page appeared asking for my details. Name , DOB, National Insurance number and date of marriage. All details completed but it then appeared details provided do not match HMRC system.

Because she tried 3 times now its not letting her enter marriage allowance details anymore.

It comes up with message:-

Error: As you have already made three attempts to match your Recipient details, you cannot select to transfer your Marriage allowance on this return.

Has anyone came across this problem?

My understanding is that section has to be completed in order I receive credit on my SA return.

Oh is this happening because the marriage allowance already transferred on HMRC system and it is on my PAYE coding. Because of this a credit of £212 will automatically applied to my SA account?

Thanks
MS

So does that mean I will get credit of £212 to my SA account once I have submitted my SA return?

That is how it should work out - a credit on your SA302 and then, if you have one, an adjustment of your PAYE tax code.

If you already have an increased tax code, then you're getting the saving by paying less tax each month on your PAYE job. You can't get it twice, if you're already receiving it via a change in tax code, you won't get any saving on your SA.

  • Yes but if credit isn't given somehow via SA you would be paying back the benefit you had already received through your tax code.

Thats exactly what I thought. When I complete my SA return and input my PAYE income from my P60 SA will calculate that I have underpaid tax of £212. So if they dont apply credit to my SA then I will loose out the benefit already applied to my tax code.

Watch your SA302 for 2015/16. This should, eventually, include:

    "minus Marriage Allowance transfer "

Don't get hung up on PAYE Tax Codes. These are solely relevant to those who pay you income under PAYE during the tax year in question.

Hi there -We've had exact same problem - wife unable to complete SA return as told details didn't match etc etc. She phoned SA helpline who transferred her to a SA adviser who said that she should change the question of whether she wanted to transfer etc to NO rather than YES, continue completing return to the end of the form where there is a box for further information. She was told that she should set out in that box exactly what had happened, and it would be sorted! However, he also said that if for any reason it wasn't adjusted correctly, then she should contact her Tax Office by phone!
Haven't tried it yet - she's just gathering up the will to do all of this!
