The over fifties thread suggested I come here....
Determined to crack this but feel like I am getting nowhere on the Internet, so I return (after a long time away) to this site. I have never had a music collection on any devices
I have been given an iPhone 5. Does anyone know which is the cheapest way to set up a playlist? iTunes or Spotify. I am getting lots of advice but it all seems sooo complicated.
Is there a simple way to set this up. I have an iPad but no desktop or laptop

What music do you want to listen to? Do you want to put your own music files on the iPhone? Do you want to put music from CDs you own on to the device?
Or do you have no music yourself, and want a way to get some and listen to it? Do you want to buy individual tracks to keep and transfer between devices for offline listening, or do you want to subscribe to a service that lets you listen music online, but where you don't actually keep the music files yourself?0 -
Look in the app store for free music apps. Most have downloads you can play offline.0

Interested in wide range of music. I have had to downsize rapidly recently so all my CD's have gone.
I just envy those that have a lovely wide range of music to listen to.
I do know that apple don't let you keep your own music but Spotify, you also just borrow ?0 -
Thanks but I am not sure any of the downloads would suit a lady the wrong side of fifty 😚0

Have a look at Spotify. The free version lets you listen to any artist, album or playlist in shuffle mode.

If you subscribe (£9.99 a month), you get rid of the adverts and can listen to tracks without having to use shuffle mode. You can also download tracks for offline listening, and on a PC you'd have access to higher quality audio.
Note that Apple charge more for a Spotify subscription than if you go direct to Spotify (unless this has changed):

Great thanks. Looks like Spotify is my next adventure.
I wish someone would invent an app... If you were born in this year, try this
Huge oversimplification I know because although my teens were in the seventies, I like lots of folk stuff from the sixties but selection seems so daunting 0 -

Yes - with Spotify you just borrow the music. If you subscribe to the premium service, you can manually download playlists so you can listen when you don't have Internet access.Great thanks. Looks like Spotify is my next adventure.

Maybe try searching for "60s" or "1960s" to find some compilation albums, and then when you find a track you like, click on the artist to hear more of their stuff. Spotify also has a "related artists" feature so, for example, if you like The Kinks, it might also suggest The Animals, etc. You can get lost for hours sometimes!
If you're thinking of subscribing, look out for promotional offers. This one gives you three months access for 99p:
https://www.spotify.com/uk/premium/
If I remember correctly, you can sign up, cancel the subscription straight away (so you don't get billed £9.99 a month after the trial), and you'll automatically switch back to the free version after the trial expires.0
