You need crampons to get out of some of the potholes in Leeds.
All the more reason to be unsurprised when they're there...

What about at night, when street lights either don't exist or are unlit? Or when someone is new to the area?

I'm not familiar with some parts of Birmingham and I have very serious doubts that some parts are ever inspected properly. Additionally there are many examples of potholes that are filled but crumble within a short time period. Then there are the infamous white lines that appear on the carriageway, giving hope that there will be resurfacing of sections of carriageway, but the lines simply fade away without repairs being done at all.

The private contractors who are paid per pothole repair have an interest in carrying out a poor repair and then get paid to reattend (possibly after a motorist has lost a tyre/wheel/suspension component or a cyclist has been injured or killed).

At this point, you may like to bear in mind the nearest streetlight to where I live is about five miles away. Even in daytime!

Round these parts, we have these wonderful things on the front of our cars called "headlights", the job of which is to illuminate the road in front of the car.
Or when someone is new to the area?

Sounds like even more reason to be looking out the windows.

There is a duty for local authorities to repair potholes. If they fail to carry out their duty they can be held liable.

The fact that cars have headlights are not addressed in relevant statute and so your point is not relevant.

Mmm. I beg to differ. While LAs can be made to pay for damage where previously-reported potholes haven't been repaired in a timely fashion, ITYF that "not looking where you're going" can lose a driver his licence in fairly short order.

No surprise involved Leeds city council has been shown to be anti-car, Its not too bad if you live on the TDF/Triathlon route, but the rest of Leeds has more crators than the moon.

    Hello,

Just had a chance to go through all the documentation they've sent me. The inspections are annually which has been accepted by courts, but the road has had 39 repairs made since January 2015 and May 20th 2016. Is this grounds to make a claim? Could I argue that the repairs were shoddy for repeat repairs being made in the same places and really a full resurface should of been done? Each repair cost £49 so obviously they were just patch ups, not where the Tarmac is removed and levelled and then properly repaired. What do you guys reckon?
