out of curiosity, which 1.9tdi specifically? Just any 1.9 from 2001 to 2008?

I'm gonna get my wife a 1.9 beetle, probably double good on fuel economy for its shape.

The 3.2 chain driven Mercedes engine is what gave birth to the "diesels run for ever" urban myth.
    That engine is almost indestructible.

A stretch towards the c320 CDI and you could have a very nice and also very quick Diesel issue might be most are Auto, but the 7 speed auto box is a rapid option and easy drive.
I do Contracts, all day every day.

ok i was looking at 2002-2006 a4 avants with 1.9tdi engine. but then i realised why settle for a4? the a6 is far more comfortable and only a little bit more expensive than the a4.

some of the a6 come in 1.9tdi engine but a lot of them are 2.5l v6 diesels. how are these like?

They can be complete crap. Bosch VP44 fuel pumps are common failures, and there's a lot of labour involved in getting to it.

VAG TDIs can go on forever, but as with all diesels, make sure they've been well maintained, especially if higher mileage. I have a 55-plate Golf TDI (the 105bhp variant) and although a tad underpowered by today's standard, as well as overly archaic, it's been a good car. Worth bearing in mind that earlier VAG diesels aren't as modern feeling as more recent ones and are a tad on the noisy side (for example the 1.9TDI is only an 8-valve engine....much like the 2.0-litre petrol engines found in VWs and Skodas, a bit coarse!). Mine's done 187k and is on it's original turbo.

If you really aren't bothered about refinement, VAG also made a non-turbo diesel engine from the early nineties, right through to 2008-ish in the form of the SDI. Not refined, although a 2.0-litre lump, only produced 75bhp ish.

Just for reference, whilst there WAS a 2.0SDI, it wasn't used in much other than the Mk5 Golf. All the others were 1.9.

A lot of Octavias and MK4 Golfs also had this engine, as well as Polos usually as part of their poverty spec in in earlier models (wind up windows and no A/C for example). There was also a 1.9 SDI I believe. The MK5 Golf SDI, although a base model, still had the odd creature comforts such as electric front windows and A/C.

Can you show me some evidence of that? I'm not aware of the 2.0 SDI ever being fitted to Golf Mk4, any Polos or Octavias.

My VAG vehicle lookup doesn't seem aware of it either.

Wikipedia also seems to agree with me (says 2.0SDI fitted to Mk5 Golf and VW Caddy) - although I won't rely on the veracity of Wikipedia as a source.

I would be interested to know if you can find a real example, though, as I can't find anything to suggest a BDJ, BST, or BDK 2.0 SDI was ever used except as suggested above in the Golf Mk5.

I might have got mixed up with the displacement if I'm honest, but know from personal experience that the 1.9-litre SDI was fitted to MK4 Golfs, Polos and Octavias.

Edit: Re-reading your post earlier, I now know where I went wrong. Discount everything, apart from the bit about 1.9 SDI engines. I took where you said "all the others were 1.9" to mean 1.9 TDIs ;)

Yes, I KNOW the 1.9SDI was used, I didn't ever dispute that. No need to prove that, I was questioning your assertion, subsequently repeated, that the 2.0SDI appeared in all the vehicles you said it did.
