Don't trust your gas meter

After searching on here I thought I'd tell my story, luckily I'm quite good at recording my gas meter every month, but I expect some people may be stung without knowing.
On checking my gas meter today I was faced with using 500 metric units in a month when normally I'd use about 60. I only could prove categorical there was no leak or excess usage by turning off the gas supply and recording the same rate of usage of 7 units over 3hour period.
The gas company GB energy did not seem to think it was serious in their words "slightly higher usage" . And it would take 3 weeks to see an engineer.
I also do not know if I will be charged extra for this faulty meter. Intially they said this type of thing never happens and implied I would be charged if I asked for a engineer without recording usage for the next 7 day to then wait 3 more weeks until someone would come .
Also to note this is a newer digital smart meter. So it pays not to trust in such things.
Hopefully I will not be excessively charged but it shows these things are not infallible .

Hi - I don't understand what you are attempting to say. If the gas supply is turned off in the meter box, then no gas should flow. If you have turned off the gas, and the meter is showing usage, then there is definitely a fault.
It's my understanding that gas meters have to be sent away for testing. If found to be faulty then there should be no charge made. The supplier should reassess your usage in the event of a meter fault. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
