What is employers' problem

This week I have had four interviews and have got another one this afternoon. Of those four interviews I have been turned down from two.

I'm always early, in a suit, have researched the company, prepped for interview, plenty of experience, plenty of qualifications.

It's not just this week but the last two/three weeks. I'm cross with this, about 100 applications, several interviews, gave it my best, jobs I have done forever, and apparently I'm not up to scratch.

Sorry, I don't believe it. I have good references, a strong background, there is no real reason why I'm not getting the job. And not only that, but it's not like they come to my flat either. I always have to go to them, do their tests, learn about their company, and it turns out to be a waste of time and money, while they get their needs met every time.

So employers, what do you REALLY want? You don't want experienced workers with common sense and a can-do attitude who take the time to learn about you, that's for sure. Also can you pay back the money I spend on bus trips if you're not going to treat a jobseeker seriously?

Did you ask them for the reasons?

Take a breath - it's not vindictive or personal - it's just business.

You can be a perfect candidate, interview really well and have all the necessary attributes... and still not get the job.

Why? Because the other candidates may have been equally good and the choice, although difficult, might just come down to something random like the best fit for the existing team, home location, shared interests or rapport or following a hunch.

I know it's really disappointing but, on a positive note, you did get to the interview stage so your CV is doing a good job.

Have you tried to get feedback from the interviews (I know this is not easy as a lot of employers shy away from this).

The alternative is asking the jobcentre about interview practice or asking friends to help.

    Good luck.

It could be personal too. Maybe they don't think you can fit into the team.

Maybe it was some of the answers you gave in the interview, if you ask for feedback you might find out if this is the case.

I was recently turned down from a job just because they thought my personality wouldn't fit in with the team - ironically because I wasn't "bubbly" enough. That's because they were speaking to interview persona me, who was nervous too!

I've also had one, where I've felt confident I'd get the role - as I was basically offered an interview and bypassed the application stage, but was turned down as my abilities weren't as great as some of the other applicants.

You win some, you lose some... Sometimes you can feel you've done everything right and not get the job. Others you can feel everything went wrong and you get it.

Remember - there's lots of people applying for the job too, not everyone can get it. If from what you're saying you have had a 50% strike rate, then consider yourself very lucky.

After I started being on interview panels, I promised myself that I wouldn't get upset if I failed to get through an interview myself in the future.

Candidates can look perfect on paper and there may be several with very similar qualifications so the final choice can come down to things the candidates have little control over such as whether they would fit into the team dynamics.

It's worth asking for a debrief but you won't always get a totally accurate answer - if you have a laugh that set the committee on edge, they are more likely to say that another candidate had more relevant experience (or some such excuse) rather than the truth.

If you are getting your foot in the door -count your self lucky! That is half the battle and it is VERY competitive out there at the moment...
    Best of luck!

Other then you are probably not the only one desperate for the job too and those other candidates are probably just as competitive. Unfortunately, getting a job is not just about doing a good interview and showing your worth, it's about being better then everyone else.

In most interviews I conduct, the decision of who to offer the job to is not obvious because there are almost always at least two very good candidates, so the difference between the two is often minor.

It is extremely frustrating and soul destroying when you get turned down but you have to believe in the rule of law, if you are indeed a good candidate, then the more you interview, the more likely that your turn will come sooner rather than later.

But there obviously is a reason because you are not being offered the jobs.

Seriously? You are complaining about having to go to them and take the interview? You might want to start here with the reason for not getting the job, if this is really your attitude.
