Being billed for calls I am not making

Having a few problems with Virgin Media. I noticed my bill was different every month and this is strange as it is a fixed price of £60 per month and I don't' use my landline. I have a deal which includes TV XL, landline and broadband. By having all 3 services I get multiple discounts, I tried to get rid of my landline previously and was told it would be an extra £5 per month (because of the discounts), so kept the landline and disconnected the phone, as I was receiving wrong numbers and PPI calls. So when I received the bill will calls included i queried this with Virgin Media. They said it is either a crossed line or the calls were coming from inside the house. The advisor I spoke to said in his experience because the calls were so little, it wasn't a crossed line and he calls were coming from inside the house. This angered me as I know I don't have a phone plugged in. He agreed to send out an engineer to "see my side of the argument", the engineer came and said there was some corrosion on the line and repaired if. No follow up cal was made and I continued to receive call bills. I called and asked why I hadn't been called back.. No solution was given, he next person said that should be it fixed and offered me £20 credit, I closed the complaint. When checking my bills that very night, more calls added. I opened another complaint and spoke to an adviser today, who also told me that he calls were coming from inside the house, anger ensued. I asked for the landline to be removed and to pay the same bill but when she checked she confirmed it would go from £60 to £79 a month to get rid of my line. She is sending out another engineer, I said what is he going to do that the other didn't. Agreed to go along with her plan and insisted the complaint stays open until I receive a callback. Also, I noted that most calls were exactly 1 min and cost 0.25p...

Has anyone else experienced this?

Any suggestions?

Thanks Elaine

    What is/are the number(s)?

The first few digits will do.
  • No isn't that. Nothing else is connected to the phone line. :(
  • Phone line isn't connected to alarm or anything.

The numbers are random local numbers. Local handymen, taxi numbers etc

By 'local', you mean 'the same 01 or 02 area code as where you live'?

Your line might be crossed with someone else's. If you don't usually use the phone you might not notice.

Try plugging in a phone, calling yourself from a mobile, and seeing if your phone rings. Let it ring........ and see if anyone else answers.

Also try calling 17070 from your phone and seeing what line number is read out.

The advisor is clearly talking out of their backside. Volume means nothing at all. Most people use mobiles now. I have a landline. Its never used.

I know it probably doesnt sound right or fair but if its going to cost £1 more to get rid of the phone isnt that better than several £ more in fake calls?

This is probably grasping at straws, but you could see if setting up 'Outgoing Call Barring' makes any difference.

See page 8 for instructions: http://assets.virginmedia.com/help/assets/documents/main-guide.pdf

But this can be cancelled/overridden with a PIN, so if call charges continue to appear, I suspect VM will simply say that whoever is making the calls knows your PIN.

OP said monthly bill will increase from £60 to £79 if the 'phone was removed. Where are you getting £1 from?
