Smart meters not compatible with underfloor heating

Hi,
My gas supplier called me the other day to discuss the possibility to install a smart meter. I was told that because I have underfloor heating the current smart meters are not compatible and that i need to wait until they are. Is this true? and if so why?

According to Ovo, what you have been told is true.

Personally, I would wait until SMETS2 compliant smart meters are rolled out later this year ( provided there is no further project slippage). the present generation meters become dumb on switch.

The present meters seem pretty dumb without switching ;) Whoever designed a meter that cannot .... er .... measure electricity use properly. I can't understand how it can measure E7 but not if you have storage heaters :o

Technically the night part of E7 which makes you a Profile Class 2 site (switched load) means the heating/hot water is on a 2nd circuit which only cuts in at night. If you don't have switched load it is in effect just a time of use tariff. To operate the 2nd circuit requires the meter to be a 5 terminal one.

The OP specifically stated 'Gas supplier'. The posts that follow have assumed electrical UFH.

It is possible to have Gas UFH!

I wonder if the supplier has also assumed electrical UFH?

I cant see why smart meters aren't compatible with UFH, only thing that I know of is solar panels, and because they produce an export energy, infact, its not even the meter which isn't compatible, its the monitor which isn't.

The new electric smart meters are compatible with E7.. Landys and Gyr E470 smart meter can operate in Eco 7 or Time of Use tariffs and import/export. Its been in use by many suppliers since at least 2012 its just that the suppliers have`nt got their systems in place to bill Eco 7 via smart meters. It is a state of the art meter and can handle everything possible for different tariffs.
I have only just seen my first smart prepayment gas meter in use this month (also a landys and gyr 470 ) 8 years after smart meters were first introduced by British Gas. It looks like Eco 7 users are relugated to the bottom of the pile by the suppliers to implement smart eco7. Its a pity because all the mess ups on eco 7 billing would end when they go smart, and we see it on here all the time .
It will be interesting to see how the fiddlers on prepay gas/electric meters get round the new smart prepay meters. I`m sure they will try but will the suppliers take any notice when the meter sends back tamper codes ? But of course, they don t have to accept a smart prepay meter anyway thanks to the goverment sticking its noses into our affairs again.
