Sixth Anniversary First Post Combo Breaker
Our 12 month electricity contract with Green Star Energy runs out on 2 July 2016 so we have found a different supplier. We asked Green Star Energy if they would charge us an exit fee if we terminated the contract on 23 June 2016 and the person on the phone did not know so she asked everyone in the office and no one knew the answer. Can Green Star Energy charge an exit fee when the end of the contract is so close? MSE recommended Green Start Energy so has anybody else had the same problem?

    That's plain daft. The supplier has a Licence to supply and the regulations relating to exit fees are clearly laid out in Condition 14A? Under the terms of its Supply Licence, the supplier is required to inform you, in the period 49 to 42 days before the end of your contract, that the contract is coming to an end. On receipt of this notification, exit fees cannot be applied.

    If a supplier fails to provide the required notice, then this is a default, and again exit fees cannot be applied.

    Either staff training is non existent or they were just trying it on.

  • Hengus is absolutely right. I personally believe they were trying (without breaking any rules) to make you stay, by not advising that there would no exit fees.

    Otherwise, this is a serious concern, as this is Energy Tariffs Basics 101, and for no one to know (in there call centre) is appalling, when most suppliers are obliged to communicate to customers when a tariff comes to an end ahead of time.
