So I set up my own business last year and have been getting by using my Seat Altea XL so far. I've sold that now because I really need a van at this stage. I've been driving for 17 years, had no accidents, no claims etc. I have 13 years NCD on my car which I know is different to van NCD. The cheapest van quote I can get on an 8 year old Vauxhall Vivaro is £1300. I don't live in a difficult area to get insurance.

I've phoned all the brokers I can think of and used all the comparison sites. I've been to the main sites that don't advertise on the comparison sites. I've had companies agree to 'mirror' my car NCD and still it's over a grand.

Is this a normal figure? It seems astronomical.

Hi Vino_tinto,

If your NCB on you main car and none for the van your missing out on over 50% discount. Most companies will give you a introductory discount but it wont be as good as a real commercial vehicle NCB.

You could transfer the NCB to the van but some companies wont accept it when if you want to put it back on the car at a later date.

I was reading a article today saying that the average cost of van insurance was £859 last year in the UK.

Thanks for this Steve. I remember running a comparison last October for a Ford Transit when I first considered it and the insurance came out at around about 300. That's why I'm so confused now about the massive leap.
