E.on Bill underestimations

I was wondering if anyone can offer any advice on my situation.
I have today found out E.on have been underestimating my bill and now want to sting me with a £1400 bill. I haven't been able to provide proper meter readings due to the location of the meter and even their own engineers have been out and have been unable to do the same. It just so happened last time they came out I was having work done on my apartment and had access to ladders which their engineer used to see the meter reading. I'm in a rented property so the landlord is reluctant to make changes to the meters despite them being dated. I live on my own, barely have the eating on and cook 1 to 3 times a week using the gas stove.
I'm really not sure what to do as I can't afford to pay the £300 e.on are requesting and it's causing much stress and upset as I already do as many hours as I can in a week to ensure I have money for essentials.
Any suggestions??

Hi DJChakaFinchos and welcome to the forum.
I'm sorry that you've found yourself in this situation, if you needed ladders how high is the meter at the moment? Is it just the electricity meter that's up there?
Did you provide a meter reading when you moved in? Or was this also estimated?
It sounds like we have now billed up to accurate reads and this is caused what we call a 'catch up' bill.
We are only obliged to read meters once every two years and do rely on our customers updating their online accounts or providing readings to us, how long have you lived in the property with the estimated bills?
We're not installing smart meters in flats/apartments as yet, so realistically it sounds like the meter may need to be moved, this is something that would be down to your landlord to get a quote from the meter operator, although I'm surprised it's in such an unusual place where it can't be read. Can you let me know where it is.
Thank you
