How early can you renew your photo driving licence?

I understand that this needs to be renewed every 10 years due to the photo. Mine runs out in September this year and I really don't want to get the fine if I forget. How soon can I apply for the renewal without being charged any more than normal?

TIA

"Your new licence will be valid from the date your application is approved, not from the expiry date of your current licence."

That's rubbish! MOTs, Passports and many other important documents allow you to apply some months before the expiry and the new expiry date is added from the expiry of the old one. This encourages people to apply well before the expiry.

However, the driving license renewal will mean people apply close to the end of the expiry which is a complete con especially when there is such a big fine involved.

Apply now and you'll only lose the equivalent of 33p. Worth putting it into perspective.

You make a very valid point! Not worth the risk given the very small cost in real terms.
