Cancelling NEST direct debit

Hi,
set up a direct debit for my daughters karate lessons only for her to decide she no longer wants to go (kids eh?!). So I cancelled the DD with my bank.
Today I've received a letter demanding I either re-instate it or call and pay £24!! It says this is payment for one month notice period as agreed.
Can they do this? I'm annoyed at having to shell out for something we haven't received.
thanks
Andy

What did the contract you agreed to say?0

I don't know, it was a form I filled out during one of the karate lessons, at the moment I can't find the copy (it's at home somewhere).
Suspect this will be a £24 lesson in reading the small print and paying cash for karate or dance lessons!0 -
It usually is cancellation fee just pay it to cause no problems as you signed the contract
did u pay monthly if so then it's for last month blame your daughter for not wanting to go anymore0 -

Not as annoyed as the karate teacher is at you unilaterally deciding to break a contract that you had willingly entered into - and if there's one thing that you don't want, it's an annoyed karate teacher! Pay the £24, and next time have the courtesy to speak to the other party when you decide you want to stop paying for something.0 -

I think you've taken the wrong slant on this, the contract was not with the karate teacher, he was fine when I let him know my daughter had decided to stop, he said she'd be welcome back any time if she change her mind. The issue is with NEST, they don't provide the service the DD was for, they just provide the method of paying for it.0 -
who are NEST? what are the terms of the contract you have with them? can you post links pls?0

Well obviously that puts a different slant on it but as your only mention of NEST was in the thread title and I for one have no idea who/what that is it's hardly surprising that I came to a different conclusion. Perhaps a bit more explanation would help you get some answers.0 -
Once again the old problem .... 'I stopped the direct debit'0
