Problem with partners credit report

Myself and my partner are trying to sort out a mortgage.
I currently own my property with my ex but want to change this.
My boyfriend as a level 8 default on his credit rating.
It is with lowell. They brought the debt from provident for over £400. However, it was my partners ex wives loan. He as just phoned lowell who say no payments have been made to the account but the debt is now £327, which they cant fathom out.
They have opened a fraud case on the loan l. Really dont know what to do as my mortgage advisor says this could stop us getting a mortgage. We have 28 days to sort it.
As anyone please got any advice for me
