TBF, many people don't realise the profile is a %age, but think it's an absolute. So all (say) 60 profile tyres are the same sidewall height, regardless of width.

When you look at the tyre size, it's not the most obvious combination of measurements...

Tread width (mm)/Profile (%) x Rim (inch) - Load rating (numerical code) Speed rating (alpha code)

This is new to me and that's embarrassing as i should know better based on my interest / previous experience with cars.

I always thought 70 / 60 etc was a measurement in itself for the sidewall, rather than a % of it.

In which case, i still think the OP is liable. They asked the garage to fix tyres they ordered and supplied.

  • I wonder if its just me, when my new tyres arrive i usually offer one up beside an existing tyre, even if the only ones are on the car to compare overall sizes, its surprising how different shoulder profiles can be in particular and make you question yourself 'did i really get this right'.

Internet buying may not be the best option for people not mechanically minded enough,

Completely fair point in general, but we're talking about reading some numbers off a tyre here. If you're mechanically minded enough to switch on/off 4WD, you should be able to transpose numbers off a tyre.

I agree but in reality we have all read of people who think the low oil pressure warning light doubles as an oil level light.

I once had to completely drain the engine and oil cooler etc when a lovely woman friend topped the coolant up...via the oil filler cap.

How many of us have found twin contact bulbs in single contact holders etc and numerous more worryingly simple things they've made a hash of.

I ordered 42 waist trousers instead of 32 waist.

Whilst walking around, they fell down and everybody saw my bum.

    Who do I sue?

I'd be very careful if I were you, you'll soon be receiving claims from people with ptsd having witnessed your incident.

  • thanks for the responses.
the car is a nissan xtrail, so was in auto select for 2 and 4 wheel drive, and it was a wet day.

yes should have ordered the correct size. BUT the garage that fitted them, did not mention anything about the size being different, and also that the rims were incorrect size for the tyres that they fitted.

So although the wrong product was ordered, I would have expected a professional company to at least check with the customer, before doing something that could be dangerous.

or... you could just look at the numbers moulded into the side of every tyre.

The chances are the rims would have been suitable to take both sizes of tyre as the rim was the same size. So chances are the garage wouldn't have had any reason to make comment on it.
Were the tyres delivered to the garage directly or to you then you took them and had them fitted?
