    When parent had this problem, the phone had decided to put the 44 Uk code in front of the number. Removing that and sticking the zero back in for mobile numbers did the trick.
    Or just put + in front of 44, if indeed that is the problem and of course remove the leading 0.

    Thanks everybody for your suggestions. Popped into the O2 shop and the young man sorted it out. He put a new sim card in, did some magic in the settings and all is well. I think Elsien was right about the number, but he said it wouldn't do any harm to have a new sim!
