Tesco Extended Warranty

I have purchased a 40" Technika TV in September 2013 and also an extended 5 year warranty with Tesco at 64.99.

In August of the following year we purchased a Nowtv box so had to use the hdmi port for the first time, we found that the ports were faulty. The TV was repaired by Tesco as it was within the first 12 months. When the courier returned the tv to us the screen was smashed. Tesco Tech advised to return the tv to our local store to exchange for another, which we did in August of 2014.

Fast forward 22 months and the screen has horizontal and vertical lines appearing.

I contacted Tesco who advised to contact squaretrade and raise a new claim online, we did and were advised of the following:

Our resolution to your issue: Find a local repair shop, have the repair carried out and send us a copy of your receipt and we will reimburse you.

I have attempted to find a repair shop in our area but its either they do not repair a Technika tv or they have emailed back to advise that the cost would outway the cost of the tv.

I contacted Tesco again and asked if i pay for the repair could they fix.... They said NO.

I have went back to squaretrade and I have now been told that they will simply take the tv back and refund me £143 as the tv is over 2 years old, the tv is not over 2 years old.

The Tesco Website states the following:

HOW DOES A SQUARETRADE PLAN WORK?

File a claim online squaretrade.co.uk call 08081891453

We give you an express pre-paid delivery label for you to send your item to us. After we fix it, we send it back to you.

If we cant repair it, we'll pay you up to the replacement value up to the coverage amount.

My online account shows my coverage amount as 299.00

I paid £239.00 for my TV, I have this evening contacted Tesco Customer Service and was passed onto the electrical helpdesk, where to be honest I just got some guy repeating that is correct please go to the squaretrade website and read the t&c's.

I asked for a supervisor, who did come across as being more helpful, he double checked the stand on repairing a Technika TV and again said that is correct we wouldn't repair after 12 months and basically the do not repair screens anyway, so it would be a new tv if the screen was faulty.

He has said that the squaretrade t&c's stand and that there isnt anything he could do. He has offered to help find a repair shop for me and said he would call back tomorrow afternoon.

I feel cheated to be honest, I have told him that basically your wasting your time taking an extended warranty if you purchase a Technika product. Surely I purchased the extended warranty under what Tesco is advertising it should live up to it??

Can anyway give me any advice?

Many Thanks

The T&C's clearly state that they will pay you the sum equal to the amount a new TV of the same spec would cost today, I assume there is a model that costs £143?

There was never anything that would give you a refund of what you paid 2 years ago. This is absolutely fine, I can't see the problem here.

The problem I have is it states that THEY will take your tv and repair it or refund you the cost of a replacement.

Neither is being done, where do you get a 40" tv for £ 143.00

If they are not sticking to the terms of the policy (check first), follow the square trade complaints procedure.

Then if that doesn't work http://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/

I imagine 40" will only be one aspect of the specs?

The tv is closer to 3 years from purchase. The current 40inch TVs will probably be three years on tech wise

Have you asked squaretrade that question?

You can currently get a 43" tv from Tesco for £189.

Time to practice your negotiating skills. ;)

With reference to you current television being less than two years old...

No warranty or guarantee that I have ever seen resets the warranted period when the goods are replaced.

You told us you bought your tv in September 2013. That is over two years ago.
The fact that the tv was replaced in August 2014 is of no relevance.
Do Squaretrade even know that the original set was replaced by Tesco?
I suppose there is even a remote possibility that your current television isn't covered by the Squaretrade warranty.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to reply, looks like I'll just have to suck it up and accept the £143!

Sometimes it takes listening to a few people before you see it from another point of view, calmed down now hee hee!

    Thanks again!

My suggestion is that in future you put the money that you pay out on a warranty towards buying a better TV than a Technika from a retailer who offers a good warranty free of charge - John Lewis or Richer Sounds are my retailers of choice.
