Can/Should I claim PPI on an unpaid 11 year old credit card?

Long story short, when I was younger I was living in London and was ridiculously stupid with money. I ran up a £5000 credit card debt with Egg, and paid the minimum payments on it for a while before circumstances changed and I moved abroad in 2005. I did come back a year later albeit to my hometown, and never really heard much about it, a couple of letters to my parents address but nothing since about 2006. There's never been anything on my credit record to do with the debt

I had PPI on the card and have never thought too much about it, but having just bought a house and being short of money I was considering making a claim

Are there pitfalls to me doing so? Could they dredge the debt up and force me to pay it? Would they even recognise it was in debt with them being defunct? It was an egg card. Is it worth chancing or would it just be more trouble than it's worth?

Thanks in advance

It would be more trouble than it is worth. You owe Egg money, any successful PPI compliant would simply reduce the amount of money you owe Egg. Egg can't enforce repayment of the debt anyway because it is statute barred. I would simply rejoice in that fact and carry on with life.
