thats very helpful info about keeping the sky email address active after leaving sky.

would it make any difference that i access my sky email via windows live mail (with IMAP protocol i believe), rather than directly thru the sky website do you think?

Problem is if they do ever decide to shut you off from email .Not a risk i would take if email was vital to me .

If Sky do allow you to keep the email address, it would be very wise to obtain one of the many free addresses, such as Gmail, GMX, Outlook etc etc..

You should then set about gradually notifying all your existing contacts to use the new address. This will protect you for the inevitable day when the Sky address ceases to function or the redirection fails.

I know it has been stated that Sky will honour existing mail accounts, but what happens if there is a policy decision to stop, or for some reason, perhaps illness or holidays, where you are unable to log in for one month.

It's too risky IMHO when the matter can be easily solved over a period of time.

+1 for switch to a non-ISP based account & set up forwarding.
No idea how you'd shift a 15 year mail archive, but suggest copying treasured images to external hard disk *before* you call sky...
I'd get a non-ISP email too. Dump/backup/archive all existing Sky email to your computer using http://www.mailstore.com/en/mailstore-home-email-archiving.aspx

When I moved from Tiscali to Gmail, I just used Thunderbird to move all my emails.
I set up accounts for each one in Thunderbird (using IMAP) and then just did a drag-and-drop with the folders.

A simple email to all my Tiscali contacts (bcc'd, of course) sent them my new email address.

Took me around 3 hours (on dial-up as well!) from memory.

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

Best way to go, IMO, is to get a gmail or gmx email address, have that address pick up your emails from Sky. You can then access them on line or via an email client, Thunderbird would be my preference.
You could then slowly drip feed your new address to whoever and both addresses would be delivered as one.
