Scammed for speeding tickets. What should I do?

In the last week we have received a registration document for a car that isn't ours in someone else's name. At first I thought it must be a mistake and some unfortunate distant neighbour had had his RegDoc sent to the wrong place.

I rang the DVLA and they told me to send it back with a covering letter, so I did.

Then over the weekend we had two notices of prosecution for speeding offences in different parts of the county, so now it's clear that this is a scam.

I rang the Camera unit in Stevenage, and they said something similar, send it back, you can put Return to Sender on it or a covering letter. She also said it would be investigated.

Then I rang my professional association legal helpline, who warned me not only to provide a letter paper trail, but also to be prepared to PROVE that we have lived here for 20 years, as Local Authorities don't need to get a court order to send Bailiffs in, are adept at losing documents or mis-placing them, and will want somewhere to get their money from.

It's not that I don't value legal advice, but this scared me, as you hear about these things happening.

Has anyone got any advice?

Yes. Post this on Pepipoo forums. We specialise here on private parking tickets (invoices) not fines/penalties.

The advice you received was correct - lay down a paper trail in case this comes back to bite.
