Updating a Tom Tom

I bought a TOM TOM LIVE at the start of 2015 on ebay.

I think it covers Europe, but is there an easy way to check this ? I plan to drive abroad on a holiday soon and would like to know it will definitely work abroad.

Also, has anyone ever updated their sat nav? I would like to update the maps just to be safe. Is this usually costly?

It should be easy to update, and my tom tom is free. It will say something like 'free lifetime updates' on the box. Make yourself a tom-tom account online, and when you plug the machine in it will update. It will also tell you when updates are due using pop-ups.

I don't know which version you have. I have one of the basic models, and it has Europe on it. I've had it a few years now, and last year I had to buy a memory card to update it as the memory was full.

Check the model you have and whether or not it has lots of free space, or whether you need a memory card.

You might find what you want here:
    https://www.tomtom.com/en_gb/sat-nav/maps-services/shop/live-services/

I can only speak of my own Garmin, which I bought as a pack with all UK and Western Europe maps. However, it came with a USB cable which connects to my PC to access the website, and find updates. There should be a similar cable with the original pack that came with your Garmin purchase.

Try the "LIVE Services Europe" icon and you may find information regarding map updates and costs.
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.

Beware USB cables with Tom Tom - my Go6000 will only properly link to my PC to download updates if I use the cable that came with it - I have other USB cables that fit into the Tom Tom and will charge it, appear to link to the PC, but will not work for donloading updates!

I'm not familiar with the more modern TomTom software - does it still have a "Browse Map" button in the menu? If it does, go into there, zoom out a little (so it doesn't take all day) and try scrolling south, see what detail you have once you're across the channel.

How curious. I have the G06100 and it has no problem updating using the USB cable that came with my Kindle.

If you tap on the menu button on the screen you should be offered a Search facility. Just search for town or city in another country and if the maps are installed it will display it.

To obtain updates you will need to download a piece of software from the TomTom site called MyDrive Connect. Create an online account login with TomTom and use this to log in to MyDrive Connect. Attach your TomTom to your PC using the USB cable and it will show how many updates are waiting. Whether you are entitled to free updates depends entirely on what deal the machine came with.

MyDrive Connect can also show you which maps are installed.

From MyDrive Connect you can also open MyDrive which is a PC version of the maps on which you can watch traffic conditions updating every few minutes. It's brilliant if you want to see if there are any holdups before you leave home.
