rusty nut and screws? help!

Hi

I have today picked up a lovely garden bench but needs restoring the only problem is that the screws and the bolts on the screws are very rusty so i cant get the nuts off to get the screws off if you know what i mean? i have tried wd40 but they still wont budge does anyone know how i can getaround this?

  • Two choices -

    1. buy some penetrating oil from a car accessory shop and allow to soak in.

    2. heat the head of the bolt - as it expands it will crack the rust - but you do need to get very hot which is difficult without burning the slats of the bench

    Try soaking them in Coke.
