Do you have somewhere to house the new rabbit until you are sure they will get on?

They may need to get used to each other for a while before housing them together,

Not really, which is another reason I would have preferred the rescue to bond them. I could set something up using a small rabbit house I have spare and use wire to split the enclosure, but it wouldn't be ideal.

I've been googling other rescues all day and now I'm beginning to think I should just forget about it. At this rate, my bunny will be elderly before I find a companion. He's already 3 yo. The rescues also seem concerned that my bunny was hand reared and say he might not get along with other rabbits.

At 3, he's only a youngster. Unless he's a giant breed, he could have another 7+ years in him. Once you've seen two bonded bunnies together, you'll see what social animals they are - I really would recommend persevering.
