Buying a (nearly) year old car...

We put a deposit down on a car that has done just over 2000 miles and was registered in 2015. We didn't find out until after we had paid our deposit that the car was registered at the end of June 2015 so is literally a couple of weeks away from being 12 months old. Which is great, because we were expecting it to be a March registered car.

But... We assume the car will be due its first service now as it is coming up to being 12 months old. When we mentioned this the dealer (very inexperienced sounding lad, but at a main dealer), he said "oh yeah, the car will be checked over for you". When we got home we realised we had been a bit daft in not pursuing this further, but are they likely to stamp the service book for us?? Will be a bit hacked off if we have to pay for a service in 2 weeks time...

A look over maybe check the lights work and tyres legal enough to get you home. If you failed to negotiate a service then one probably wont be done.

    What is the car?
Is it part of an approved used programme?

Some cars are only due a service every 2 years or 18,000 miles or so. I don't subscribe to that view, and do mine every 8-10,000 miles, or every year, whichever is soonest.
  • It's a Peugeot, from a Peugeot main dealer. It is due a service at 12 months or 16,000 miles whichever comes first.

If you're buying it from a Peugeot main dealer and its due a service, insist they service it and stamp the book
