Keep an eye on the visa situation. The current 15 day visa exemption for British Passport Holders is due to expire for any visits that start after 30 June 2016.

The Trip Advisor Vietnam Forum has a few current threads on the subject, so might be worth dropping in there.

If visiting again, I'd do a luxury bus from Hanoi to a hotel near the bay, stay the night, do a cruise, then get a transfer to Hai Phong airport and fly on to somewhere.

Probably Saves 24 hours by not backtracking to Hanoi and wasting time.

    Some interesting destinations too...

That's interesting. I wasn't aware that there was an airport near Halong. In which case flying down to Da Nang for Hoi An (about 45 mins by road) would make sense.

Hoi An is lovely, nice and relaxing. And the food is excellent.

And the beer is very, very cheap

10,000 Dong for a large beer is about 30p. Cheapest I found for a glass of fresh beer was 12p.

Hai Phong airport is nearer than Hanoi airport, as a comparison, if you stayed at the Novotel Ha Long Bay, the road journey is approximately 1.5 hours less to Hai Phong airport than HAN.
