Speeding laptop up

I have a Sony Vaio laptop with 4gb ram. It was always super speedy until around 6 months ago, and now I can't open more than 5 tabs at once otherwise it takes 5 minutes to load the pages.
Running latest version of Chrome. I'm with BT Infinity 2 at 56mb/s. Run CCleaner once a week and have deleted all programs that I have no use for.
Any thoughts anyone? This is driving me mad!

    Short Test

To get an idea of the real speed of your computer without unnecessary programs running, connect your PC via ethernet cable to your modem and switch off your wireless.

Start your computer in Safe mode with networking.

Then try your browser and tabs and see how fast/slow that is as against your normal mode.

    And do the BT speedtest.

A fresh install of the O/S would be my first step.

Then an upgrade to an SSD drive.

Both arent as difficult as you'd think.

What version of windows are you running?

Chances are there are some malware/trojans in your computer.
As suggested, clean Windows installation will solve everything.

And if you afford upgrade to SSD hard drive (around £50).

First step would be to clean a Malwarebytes in safe mode.
Second step would be to type msconfig in run uncheck startup programs which you don't need running upon logging in.
Third step wold be to run wise-cleaner to clean and optimize the laptop.

Try the steps above before doing anything major.

99% chance you have crapware running in the background .

Download the free version of malwarebytes from here :- https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/

And DO NOT run it in safe mode as advised above.
Many of the unwanted process will not be running in safemode so malwarebytes will not be aware of them to remove them.

It should only be run in safe mode if your pc is that borked that you cant get it to run in normal mode, but then it should be run in normal mode straight after.

    Hope this helps

In addition to all the above, it's possible your browser profile has become corrupted. You could try creating a new profile to see if the problem persists.
    http://www.pcworld.com/article/2089364/how-to-create-and-manage-multiple-user-profiles-in-chrome.html

Failing that (and as above), scan for malware, and reinstall the OS if that doesn't speed things up.

Have you used the CCleaner registry cleaner? Generally you shouldn't need to touch the registry, and these cleaners can do more harm than good as they aren't very intelligent. Maybe that has caused a problem with your PC? (The file cleaning part of CCleaner is fine, though.)
