Council tip worrys

Options
Hi all,

I am a bit concerned I went to the tip this weekend this get rid of some rubbish when I was there I saw a skip with a pile of PC games so I grabed a couple the with out thinking about it and put them in the back of me car. It wasn't till I nearly emptied the car of my rubbish that I thought to myself is this illegal. So I chucked the games away back in another skip.

My question is was I breaking the law , can I get convicted of theft.

At the tips round us, you take anything you want to have to the tip office (or grab a member of staff) and they give a nominal price. Normally £1-£2 depending on the item(s). i.e. I got a wicker chair for £2 and a shelving unit on another trip for £2. I don't know the law in this regard sorry.

As you did not remove the games from the premises, clearly you cannot be charged with theft.

However I understand that as soon as item is placed in a skip it becomes the property of the owner of that skip, especially where councils are concerned. So, if you had taken the games off the premises, you could have been charged with theft.
If you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales
  • I see, my concern is if was seen taking them but they did not see me chuck them away in another skip as when I chucked they games away they were bundled in all my other junk.

Don't worry about them seeing you/not seeing you .... if they saw you they'll have double checked what you did next....

Yes it'd be illegal to take them ... but you didn't.

It's daft really that so much is thrown away, but they can't keep everything "in case" somebody wants it.
  • Just got the image of the police knocking at me front door I've been stressed the past few days. It is a waste some of the stuff at the tip.

I doubt if the police would even bother with this. CCTV cameras couldn't identify the games and may not have been able to identify you, and the council have probably suffered no financial loss, so the police if even if you could be identified would not waste their time,

I've stealthily put things in my car, asked other members of the public for stuff and quietly bought items from tip workers. I haven't been arrested. It is a waste when good usable items are destroyed. People should try freecycle or similar before dumping stuff but many are indifferent.
I suspect part of the reason is to prevent tip lurkers spending all day filling their cars with other peoples rubbish.

Our council had to stop people taking things from the tip (when it was a tip, rather than the current recycling centre) because a couple of traveller families were constantly there, grabbing things out of people's cars - including stuff that wasn't going to be thrown away.

The recycling centre has places for people to put things that are too good to get rid off but lots of useful stuff gets thrown into the rubbish skips.

I use Freegle and charity shops to get rid of most things - it's so sad to see things that still have life in them being thrown away.

There is a charity shop at our local [STRIKE]tip[/STRIKE] recycling centre

Its not good when I go to take stuff I often end up bringing something home :( :rotfl:

I think the staff go though the bins to collect anything that is good enough for the shop.

Wholly illegal as once something is binned it becomes the property of the relevant recycling site , this is 100% true as i do household waste recycling centre jobs for a company i will not name as i am not allowed too .
