Hi, can anyone tell me if this app is legal. My daughter wants to download it as it allows you to download YouTube videos and watch them offline.

I've searched online and it's seems to be a safe app but not sure how it allows offline content as this surely stops the need to legally download music.

I'm not sure of the app, but in order to watch anything on the Internet, you first need to download it, whether as a complete file or a stream.

Essentially, the Internet allows interconnected computers to download content from each other. It's by design. The app simply makes it easier to retain content for offline use.

It's not illegal to produce or use these kind of apps. However, as with any copyrighted content, it's up to you to adhere to any licensing terms. It's not illegal not to; it would be a civil matter.

What's the difference between watching a video on YouTube, and downloading it from YouTube to watch later...?

Anyway, the audio quality of virtually all music videos on YouTube is terrible!

Thanks esuhl, it was the copyright and licensing terms I was worried about. I will try and find out a bit more about it.

I'm no expert on the subject, but there's a project called get_iplayer, which allows you to download programmes from BBC iPlayer for offline viewing. After 30 days, you are prompted to delete the programme to comply with "fair use" copyright terms.

And, back in the old days of VCR recording of broadcast programmes, and home-taping radio, I think you were allowed to record for the purposes of personal "fair use"... which was unofficially deemed to be keeping the recording for 30 days to watch/listen to later.

I don't know if these things apply, but I don't think there would be any issues in using web content offline for personal use (for up to 30 days... at which point... I guess you could download it again...?).
