Sink plugs

Hi all, I might be showing a level of ignorance here but I wanted to pick others brains.
Is it easy to retrofit a pop up waste plug in an ordinary basin?
I am sick to death of our plugs (tried plastic, metal and rubber) getting stuck in the sink under pressure of the water and making the chain break. My thoughts are pop up wastes but not if it means replacing the basins.
So is this a wait till we re-do the hand basins in a few years or can they be done with a few spare hours and a trip to Wickes? Xx

I think you need a hole in the top surface of the basin (I assume you mean you want to fit one not replace an existing one).0

Just about impossible to retfo fit.
As a solution to your problem there are flat saucer shaped stoppers that lay flat over the waste out let. We have one and it works very well.I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.0 -
There's various waste fittings (have a search on Screwfix, Toolstation etc) - you get pop-up ones driven by a rod, moved up up/down by a knob near the tap and obviously these need to be fitted with the matching tap, so hard to retro-fit. But you also get ones that pop-up by pushing on the waste itself (search for click-clack waste), you also get some with a captive swivel plug, so plug is always there, you just rotate it to open/close. The last two are independent of the taps.
What's the access like to the waste and trap underneath, is it open, or is there a pedestal or boxing-in that needs removing?
It's a case of changing the waste fitting, so you'd need to get acccess first, remove the trap, remove the old waste fitting from the sink (normally held on by a nut underneath) then fit a new one and refit the trap.0 -

Absolutely all wrong, it couldn't be easier.
Most modern pop up wastes work be simply pressing down the plug, once to plug the basin and a second time to empty, no holes needed.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)
Always expect the unexpected:eek:and then you won't be dissapointed0 -

I can't think of a single situation where it would be " about impossible to retfo fit."
May change the outlet height a little but that's what adjustable bottle traps are for, go for it.I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.

I've never had a plug chain break due to 'pressure of the water'...."You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

The plug seems to form a vacuum when there is water in the basin, you end up pulling the plug up and instead break the chain. It's the same on all the basins, never had the problem in other homes.
I'll have a look at click clack wastes, thanks all. There is a pedestal on two but it's reachable maybe with a mirror at the back to judge what I'm seeing!

As somebody tha fits kitchens and bathrooms for a living, I can advise the following.
1) the retro fitting Pop up waste is very straight forward, providing it isn't one that is conne ted to the rod on the back of a mixer tap.
2) the pop up wastes themselves can be problematic. They often get stuck down. As a rule, we don't encourage customers to have them. Instead we prefer what Screwix refer to as a 'captive waste'. Others know them as 'flip over wastes'. These are a good solution and wont fail at some point down the line.Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.0 -

That's the type I'm after I think, the flip over waste. Thanx for your help xx0 -
I use one of these universal ones. They do pop up, or you can just remove them when you're finished.
