Virgin package and redundancy

Have internet, tv xl, phone line with Virgin. Been a subscriber for over 15 years. I have been made redundant and have a month left. I am a single parent with children ranging from 14 to 20.
Internet is a must because kids use it for coursework.
Telephone line not needed. I have a BT line.
We tend to watch certain channels which means I can downgrade from xl to maybe m package.
When i rang the customer service they wanted to put me on a 18 month contract if I wanted to downgrade to save money.
Has anyone had any success when they threaten to leave?
Will I work out cheaper if I cancel the telephone line? From what I can find it may cost me more.
If I leave how long do I have to wait till I can be classed as a new customer?
Is there a cheaper provider out there? For tv and internet.

You need to work out what channels you really need and can afford .
You appear to be paying VM for a line and BT for a line ??0 -
Yes I am. Need BT for family etc. At one point it worked out cheaper to accept Virgin line.0

Likewise i don't understand why you pay twice for the same product .
BT line rental is about £19 per month .0 -
At one stage to qualify for loyalty discount I had to include the line in the package. The overall price was cheaper than without line. Plan was when discount period was finished I will disconnect the Virgin line.
Plan to do it now but want to sort out the best way to reduce the price or see if there is a cheaper alternative out there. Been looking at sky etc packages but can't seem to decide0 -
Op what you can do is just go for Virgin BB only £31 a month and get freeview for TV.What happens if you push this button?0

But why you kept bt line too?
You could have ported that number to virgin media line.0 -
