BBC iPlayer Radio & TV License

  • Why can't they be distinguished? On my desktop here I see that there is iPlayer and the radio is marketed as iPlayerRadio)). As someone who doesn't have a TV or watch catch-up I can't say that I'll be paying £140 for catch-up radio. Whether I use it or not is another matter, but as a law abiding person I can also say that bad law, particularly when enforcement is problematical, gets discredited and ultimately ignored.

Don't take VisionMan's certainty over this for meaning anything at all!

I'm just as sure that radio will be excluded. It is a TV licence after all.

    (My bolding.)

iPlayer shares the same branding for TV and radio, yep, but all the discussion I've heard and read from government and from the BBC is about iPlayer for television, and people "watching" (not listening to) programmes who don't have a licence (which currently is totally legit of course, so long as it's on demand not live).

We shall see what happens - I agree no one can be certain. I would however wager that this proposal will only apply to iPlayer for TV, and radio will be excluded. (After all, it is a TV licence, not a TV & radio licence.)

I agree that none of us can be certain, but going forward, the proposal is that future access of and to the iPlayer will require a TV licence. And thats any access.
  • Right, I've gone on to the TV Licensing website and the definitive answer is No, one does not need a licence to listen to radio via BBC iPlayer.

The full answer and explanation is given under the question Will I need a TV Licence for all on demand programmes?

So VisionMan's earlier certainty was misplaced (i.e. he was wrong!).
