Universal Credit

So when you become unemployed it would be logical to sign up to universal credit (the new jsa)

however, when you are made redundant or fired, you obviously get your final pay...

upon signing up to UC, HMRC can see how much money has gone into your account...

If its more than £350 you get NOTHING for that month...

I was expecting £330 this friday, however they said to be i will not be getting anything as hmrc reported to them i received £600

(i said that was my redundancy pay...? -_-)

effectively, what they are saying is 'whatever money you have, or have received, you have to use that up first, before you can come to us... i preferred the old JSA... because i was signing on whilst working and i didnt inform them until i couldnt be bothered to sign on anymore -

so effectively from now, i have to wait a whole another month until i can get a measley £330...?! are they serious?

universal credit is definitely not good at all whatsoever

So you prefer the old system because you could get away with benefit fraud and now you cant?

If its that measly why do you need it?

    Well..... bummer for you.

You don't get anything for approx 5 weeks, that is standard procedure unless you walk off the job then that could be a different procedure altogether.

I know what you mean (not about defrauding them though!!!)

I was made unemployed, but still had 1 week's pay to come into my account and they used that to pay me less. I still would have received something as I was claiming housing benefit and JSA as part of Universal Credit. I thought it was incredibly unfair as if your previous job was paid monthly and you finished work mid month or early in the month they would count that, whereas before it was fortnightly and they paid you from the day you were made unemployed despite whether you had money still to come from your ex employer.

Luckily for me, this month I finished my job a couple days before pay day, so held off claiming Universal Credit until payday so they couldn't use it as an excuse not to pay me anything - otherwise if I don't get a job this month my rent would have to come from my small amounts of savings/overdraft instead!

I had 3 days pay coming which came to £170 which had to last me 5 weeks, if I hadn't have put away any money whilst working, I would have been well and truly screwed.
It's not what I wanted to use my savings for but that's the way it is with universal credit.

look at contributions based job seekers allowance if you have paid your stamp, you get if for 6 months. It was included in the universal credit trial.

I was on the trial (30,000 of us guinea pigs in the north west) and it was just universal credit. Have just had a second 'dose' of it for two months.
It's gradually rolling out to the rest of the country

UC is pretty horrible. I went to my first "work coach" meeting and thought that they were pretty intrusive. They treat you like an idiot.

On the bright side she mentioned that they could help out with transport costs, on condition of a job offer. But otherwise I felt treated like a child. Now I know why they call it "nanny state"

i just want to know how UNIVERSAL CREDIT benefits people who are unemployed/redundant?

the only thing i can see which is different to JSA is that they look into your bank account to see how much you got paid/where the money came from/which orgnisation... and if its above £300, UNIVERSAL CREDIT gives you NOTHING for that month...

JSA, sign on every 2 weeks and receive around £170 every 2 weeks, without question...

so why did they change it over...?

and for the people on UC or alike, how can i obtain some form of money... as there is no way i can receive £600 on april 25th (final pay from work) and not get UC on 5th june (because it was over the threshold), but they telling me i have to wait now till 5th july.......

    thats just ridiculous.....

I don't know what area you live in and the criteria that is being used for UC in that area.

    If you read this link

    https://www.citizensadvice.org.uk/benefits/universal-credit/before-you-apply/universal-credit-eligibility/

there are certain restrictions in some areas which means that you can't claim UC. One of those is if you earn over a certain amount (read the link)

If you are in one of those areas then it is perfectly possible to claim JSA and HB and CT reduction instead of UC.

There is a UC helpline number in the link so give them a call.

JSa is no different to UC in that it will look at your pay and the period it was paid for. The redundancy money (if that is what is was) would be counted as savings. I suspect that it was probably more like pay in lieu of notice/holiday pay.

In any case, telephone the help line and find out what you should do.
